Today, January 6, 2016, was Blessing of the Waters in Greece. It is also known as Epiphany and in Greek, Theofania. In Greece the custom is for the priests (pappas) to throw a cross into the water and swimmers jump in to the sea to retrieve it. The waters are then blessed by the priests. There was a big crowd today in Paleo Faliro — south of central Athens — to watch the event. The weather was balmy, the waters warm. A number of women were sunbathing in bikinis. Watch the 2:44 minute video of the Theofania.
